Jars or Bags

Jars or Bags?

One of the most common questions new cultivators ask is whether they should use jars or grain bags.

The answer depends on your goals.

Mason Jars

Pros

  • Reusable
  • Easy to inspect
  • Great for beginners
  • Less expensive over time

Cons

  • Smaller capacity
  • Heavier
  • More transfers required

Grain Bags

Pros

  • Larger grain volume
  • Less handling
  • Easier for bulk grows
  • Excellent for scaling production

Cons

  • Disposable
  • Require an impulse sealer
  • Slightly higher upfront costs

My Recommendation… If you’re just learning, start with mason jars. They’re forgiving, inexpensive, and make contamination easier to spot.

Once you’re comfortable with sterile technique, move to grain bags. They save time, reduce transfers, and make larger grows much easier to manage.

That’s exactly the progression I followed, and it’s the one I recommend to most new cultivators.
