Grain Preparation
Difficulty: Beginner
Time: About 24 hours
Grain Used: Popcorn
If you’re new to mushroom cultivation, grain preparation can seem intimidating. You’ll find countless methods online, each claiming to be the only correct way. The truth is much simpler. Once you understand what you’re trying to achieve, preparing clean, healthy grain spawn is easy.
For years I’ve used popcorn because it’s inexpensive, easy to inspect for contamination, and holds up well during sterilization.
What You’ll Need
Popcorn kernels
Large pot
Water
Colander
Grain bags or mason jars
Pressure cooker or autoclave
Step 1 – Rinse the Grain
Place your popcorn in a colander and rinse thoroughly to remove dust and debris.
Step 2 – Soak Overnight
Cover the popcorn with plenty of water and let it soak for 18–24 hours.
Soaking allows the kernels to fully hydrate and gives bacterial endospores time to germinate so they’ll be destroyed during sterilization.
Step 3 – Simmer
Transfer the soaked grain to a pot.
Bring to a gentle simmer for about 45–60 minutes.
The kernels should be fully hydrated but not burst open.
Step 4 – Drain
Drain the popcorn thoroughly.
Spread it out or let it sit in the colander until the outside of each kernel feels dry.
This step is one of the most important.
Wet grain creates bacterial problems.
Step 5 – Load Bags or Jars
Fill your grain bags or jars approximately 2/3 full.
Don’t overfill.
The grain needs room to shake after inoculation.
Step 6 – Sterilize
Sterilize at:
15 PSI
2–2½ hours for bags
90–120 minutes for jars
Allow everything to cool completely before inoculating.
Final Thoughts
Good grain preparation is one of the biggest factors in successful cultivation. Don’t rush the drying step, and always let your bags cool before introducing culture.
